Phoenix's First: An Introduction to Mindfulness is inspired by my students - their diversity, curiosity and ability. It follows Phoenix on a day he soars to tackle a big "first". A picture book that makes it easy for all teachers to introduce mindfulness to classrooms.

Mindfulness is all the buzz right now in education. Of the 9 schools I've been teaching in for the 2017-2018 school year, few have a school-wide policy or strategy to introduce mindfulness into the classroom.

The bridge to have teachers embrace mindfulness strategies AND confidently implement tactics may be an ask that's a smidge too far.

Leaving aside the new-age hocus pocus of what some may consider mindfulness to be, what has stood the test of time? Read-alouds. It's the hook to an elementary classroom's melody: students have come to expect it and teachers enthusiastically repeat it - each rendition with the excitement as if it were the first.
